PREVIEW: Taína Asili to Launch 150-Mile Climate Justice Pilgrimage to NYC
Albany-based, nationally renowned singer and activist Taína Asili has announced she will set out on The Fever Pitch Pilgrimage, a 150-mile journey walking from Albany to New York City in the name of climate justice.
Taking place from September 13th through the 27th, it will include daily performances and community events in collaboration with local social and climate justice organizations. The pilgrimage team will have a send-off at the Corning Preserve in Albany at 11 A.M. on Saturday, September 13th with a song offering and ceremonial gathering for the journey ahead.
Asili boasts an impressive catalog of liberation songs that have been featured in Rolling Stone, NPR, Billboard, and Democracy Now! among other publications, and her journey as an artist has seen her perform on stages ranging from the Lincoln Center for Performing Arts in New York City to the Women’s March on Washington. Now she is preparing to bring her music on the road in a new way: walking an average of 15 miles each day. The artistic team she’s assembled will present performances ranging from brief song offerings to full Fever Pitch concerts in collaboration with local organizations that uplift movements for immigrant rights, racial, gender, and climate justice.
About midway through the journey on September 21st, she will sail from Newburgh to Haverstraw aboard the historic Clearwater. The pilgrimage will then continue on foot into New York City, culminating during New York Climate Week with a final performance of the walk at UPROSE in Brooklyn on September 26th. The pilgrimage continues with an electric car drive to the Abundance Festival in Chester, NY, with a final performance benefitting the Black Farmer Fund on September 27th. The following week, Taína will offer the Capital Region premiere performance of “Fever Pitch” on October 4th at 7 P.M. at The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy.
The Fever Pitch Pilgrimage is supported by a growing list of sponsors and partners including grassroots organizations, artists, and community leaders. A GoFundMe campaign and sponsorship drive are currently underway to support artist fees, accommodations, and free/sliding scale performances throughout the route.
