INTERVIEW: Dan Soder to perform at The Egg this Thursday

Albany is excited to welcome Dan Soder this Thursday, May 15th at The Egg!
A seasoned comic based in New York City, Soder boasts an impressive 21-year career in comedy. While he is perhaps best known for his role as Mafee in the acclaimed series Billions, he humbly insists he does not identify as an actor. “I’ve done one thing!” he says, downplaying the array of roles he has tackled over the years. But at his core, it’s clear that his true passion lies in comedy, for better or worse.
Recently, Soder took a bold step by releasing a comedy special on YouTube—an avenue typically associated with emerging comedians. Given his impressive credits with HBO, Comedy Central, and Netflix, he cheekily refers to it as more of a "mixtape."
“Everything shifted so much during COVID,” he reflects, explaining the decision behind this unconventional release after his 2019 HBO special. This move captures the unpredictable nature of the industry, where trends can rise and fall in an instant.
“The industry's starting to die,” he observes. “It's just been kind of fun to make [my] own stuff and put it out the way it's supposed to be put out.”
Soder emphasizes the importance of making his new material accessible to everyone, particularly to those who may not have an HBO (or other streaming service) subscription. This approach allows him to reach a broader audience without the barrier of a paywall.
His strategy is paying off, as new fans begin to purchase tickets for this tour, a bit of a warm-up for the upcoming “Golden Retriever Tour” set to launch in Los Angeles this fall.
In a landscape where reality TV stars, struggling actors, and TikTok sensations dominate comedy stages, Soder remains grounded, approaching his craft with a refreshing sense of humility.
“Whenever I hear comics try to inflate it and try to act like it's this wise, brave thing to do, you're like, no, we're just the bottom level. We're just clowns. We're just lucky we're not getting fired from another job.”
