“Like celestial waves crashing down around you, I, Supernova delivers an instrumental post-rock album that doesn’t need words to move you.”
Instrumental rock music has taken many forms, perhaps none more intriguing than post-rock. A genre defined by bucking the conventions of rock music, it uses traditional instrumentation in conjunction with non-traditional, ultimately creating something that sounds more like a soundscape, even cinematic. Enter the debut album from Albany-based I, Supernova — Asterisms, Vol. 1 — released on Deep Elm Records, June 12.
Like celestial waves crashing down around you, I, Supernova delivers an instrumental post-rock album that doesn’t need words to move you. The opening track, “Keystone” is layered in sound, akin to the countdown before being thrust into space. Grounded by beautiful strings and piano which eventually give way to bombastic guitars, driving bass, and massive drums, the track delivers the sonic blast when you’re least expecting it. It’s a good introduction for the rest of the album — putting you into its orbit and keeping you on your toes.
There is no shortage of atmospheric elements in this album; it brings a cinematic vibe in a way that encourages you to visualize floating in space amongst the cosmos. Songs like “Terebellum“ and “Little Dipper“ come to mind, creating incredible aural depictions of serenely encountering the cold depths of space. As the notes go by, you, too, are drifting by the planets and galaxies, witnessing collisions and well…supernovas.
“The Water Jar,” utilizes symphonic sounds in an epic manner, with brass and string instrument patches that add a level of intrigue. The melodies from the guitars sit on top of everything and the track feels sophisticated, if not majestic. It’s the only track that utilizes those sounds, which makes it feel that much more special.
I, Supernova draws from unexpected places throughout the record, with progressions and riffs that would typically be found in a pop-punk or a new wave album. Yet, they don’t feel out of place. One such song is “Engagement.” At one point, there is a driving bass line with the accompanying drums that move into syncopated guitar lines, eventually falling into a major key breakdown and soaring leads that give early 00’s vibes. It then gives way back into the atmospheric post-rock quite effortlessly.
With Asterisms, Vol. 1, I, Supernova honors the traditional elements of the genre while adding a unique flavor that helps it stand out. This album lives up to its name — from tranquil listening to engaging planetary crashes of sound, it’s one ride you don’t want to miss out on.
