PREVIEW: Upbeat on the Roof Returns For its 25th Year

Starting 07/09 @ The Tang at Skidmore, Saratoga Springs

The Tang Museum at Skidmore College, provided

Live music-loving Saratogians and Capital Region members alike, get ready for Upbeat on the Roof!

Upbeat on the Roof offers a series of concerts that showcase regional musical talent in an array of styles, from funk to pop-punk, R&B, folk, indie folk, indie pop, and Americana. Be sure to show up because you might find your new favorite local band may just be in the line-up.

Performances take place on the lawn outside the Tang, located on the Skidmore campus, and all are free and open to the public, so you won’t have to worry about breaking the bank to explore what the Capital Region's music scene has to offer.

The lineup kicks off on July 9 with the five-piece analog funk band, Oobleck. Next up, catch pop-punk trio Paintbrush Charlie on July 16, followed by the smooth R&B and neo-soul sounds of The E-Block on July 23. Close out the month on July 30 with folk artist/banjo extraordinaire Carolyn Shapiro. The music keeps rolling into August with indie-folk band Little Saints on August 6, the self-proclaimed, donut-fueled indie-pop quartet Nice Hockey on August 13, and a spectacular Americana finale by The Millstone Rounders on August 20.

Before each of the concerts, Tang Art Educators will be hosting Crafts on the Grass: art-making kits for kids starting at 5:30 p.m. A unique craft will be available each week, so if music isn’t your thing — or if you love both — you can participate in that as well. All projects are suitable for children ages five and older, though adult supervision is recommended. Materials will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, so get there early to take advantage of that.

The Upbeat concert series first came to fruition in the summer of 2001 on the roof deck of the Tang building. The series became so popular, however, that the concerts came off the roof and onto the lawn. The Upbeat on the Roof name remains despite this change, paying homage to the origins of the series. Visitors are invited to bring blankets, camping chairs, food, and drink to picnic on the lawn; plenty of parking is available in the lot adjacent to the museum.

For more information, please call the Visitors Services Desk at 518-580-8080 or visit tang.skidmore.edu. In the case of inclement weather, the art-making activities and concerts will be held inside the museum.
