PREVIEW: Eight Poets Reading at a Renewed Art Space

10/11 @ The Fish Market, Troy

“I wanted to pair it down and include new, local poets that I had seen [or] heard over the previous year,” says Panza. “I felt it was a way to introduce poets to one another and make the community aware of these great publications.”

For almost a century, zines have been a form of low-budget expression for poets, writers, and artists around the world. These small publications allow DIY creatives to share their art with the world without the barriers of publishing fees and other costs. This tradition has flourished in the Capital Region and the Hudson Valley, with zines like Trailer Park Quarterly and Hobo Camp Review, both supported by the Hudson Valley Writer’s Guild, and the Paper Moon Zine. This Saturday, these zines will be celebrating and highlighting eight different poets at a matinee event in Troy.

The readings began a few years ago by the HVWG to celebrate and support their online zines, Trailer Park Quarterly, edited by Rebecca Schumejda, and Hobo Camp Review, edited by James H. Duncan.

This particular reading, called “Eight Poets,” will be held on October 11th at 3pm at The Fish Market in Troy and is free to attend. The Arts Center of the Capital Region purchased The Fish Market with the intent to rehab the closed down storefront into a space for artists to gather, connect, and create. When event organizer Mary Panza was looking for a venue to host, it seemed like the perfect pick.

“We have had many different events surrounding these zines. I wanted to pair it down and include new, local poets that I had seen [or] heard over the previous year,” says Panza. “I felt it was a way to introduce poets to one another and make the community aware of these great publications.”

In the past few months, Panza has gotten close with the creatives behind Paper Moon Zine, Joshua Gruft and Eric Turner. She looped in Paper Moon to have writers from previous and upcoming Paper Moon Zine issues read at the event. “Eight Poets” promises to be an exciting event showcasing various poets and zines from the Capital Region and Hudson Valley.
