Jennifer and Justin Miller, owners of Albany’s Lark Hall and no relation to yours truly, once again treated the Capital Region to a great night of live music. This time, they welcomed renowned guitarist Steve Kimock, backed by an all-star band, for the All You Need Is George tour. The tour pays tribute to the late, great George Harrison.
Joining Kimock on stage were lead guitarist and vocalist Jackie Greene (The Black Crowes, Phil Lesh & Friends), bassist and vocalist Berry Duane Oakley (Allman Betts Band), drummer and vocalist Pete Lavezzoli (Jerry Garcia Band, Jazz Is Dead), and keyboardist Gil Assayas (Todd Rundgren’s Utopia).
The first set leaned heavily into songs performed by Harrison as a solo artist. Highlights included “If Not for You,” “Isn’t It a Pity,” and a spiritual version of “My Sweet Lord,” sung by Greene. The second set put the spotlight on Harrison’s work with The Beatles and the Traveling Wilburys, kicking off with a fantastic Beatles medley that included “Taxman” > “Norwegian Wood” > “I Want to Tell You” > “If I Needed Someone.” Also included were a pair of Traveling Wilburys hits — “Handle with Care” and “End of the Line.” Rounding out the second set was “Badge,” co-written by Eric Clapton and Harrison and performed by the British rock band Cream. Wrapping up the evening was an epic encore that included a pair of Beatles hits, “Here Comes the Sun” and “While My Guitar Gently Weeps.”
By the end of the night, it was clear that this was more than just a concert. It was a celebration of the life and legacy of George Harrison and his music.
