PREVIEW: Michael Benedict & BOPITUDE Bring Hard Bop Heat

6/19 @ The Van Dyck, Schenectady

“With a lineup of top-tier regional players, the group honors the genre’s golden age while digging up lesser-known gems and pushing them into the 21st century.”

The Van Dyck Music Club is in for a swingin’ night of sharp suits, sharper solos, and that timeless, hard bop groove.

On Thursday, June 19 at 7:30 PM, drummer Michael Benedict and his critically acclaimed quintet, BOPITUDE, return to Stella Pasta Bar’s upstairs music room in Schenectady for Thirdsday Nite 008: the venue’s monthly jazz series spotlighting heavy-hitters and local legends.

BOPITUDE revitalizes the Hard Bop era in a unique and modern way. With a lineup of top-tier regional players (Chris Pasin on trumpet, Brian Patneaude on tenor sax, David Gleason on piano, and Mike Lawrence on bass), the group honors the genre’s golden age while digging up lesser-known gems and pushing them into the 21st century.

Led by Benedict, a SUNY Potsdam and Rutgers alum with a résumé that includes global tours and a State Department-sponsored performance stint in Tunisia, BOPITUDE has earned national praise. DownBeat Magazine gave them four stars and named their 2013 album, Five and One, one of the year’s best jazz recordings.

Whether you’re a diehard jazz head or just in it for the vibes, this one’s worth the ticket.
